What is a GST Registration?

Goods and Services Tax (GST) is India's unified indirect tax regime. GST registration is mandatory for businesses with annual turnover above ₹40 lakh (₹20 lakh for some categories), for businesses making inter-state supplies, for e-commerce sellers, for casual taxable persons, and for those liable under reverse charge. Registration results in a 15-character GSTIN that must be quoted on every invoice.

FAQ

Common questions

Who must register for GST?

Businesses with aggregate turnover above ₹40 lakh (₹20 lakh for service providers and for special-category states), businesses making inter-state supplies, e-commerce sellers, casual taxable persons, non-resident taxable persons, and those liable under reverse charge.

How long does GST registration take?

Typical end-to-end time is 5–7 working days: 1 day for application filing, 2–5 days for department verification, 1 day for GSTIN issuance. Aadhaar-authenticated applications are faster.

Can I register voluntarily below the threshold?

Yes. Voluntary registration is allowed and often beneficial if your customers are GST-registered (they can claim ITC) or if you want to project a more established business presence.

What is a composition scheme?

An alternative scheme for small businesses with turnover under ₹1.5 crore (₹75 lakh for some categories) — simpler returns and lower tax rates, but no ITC. Not allowed for inter-state supply.

Is GST registration needed for each state?

Yes. If you have a place of business in multiple states, you need a separate GSTIN for each. One PAN can have multiple GSTINs across states.
